Women’s Basketball Defeats Anderson for Fifth Straight Win

Anderson, Ind. - The Franklin College women's basketball extended its winning streak to five games in a 66-50 Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference (HCAC) victory at Anderson University on Saturday. The Grizzlies improve to 7-6 on the season and 5-1 in league action.

The Grizzlies stand in second place in the conference standings.

Freshman Lauren DeSutter (Pittsboro, Ind./Tri-West) had a career-best scoring performance for the second-straight game, tallying 21 points. The guard did not miss a shot, going 6-for-6 from the field, including five three-point field goals. She also made all four of her free throw attempts.

Franklin used a 17-6 run over the final 5:10 of the first half to build a 35-22 lead at the break.

The visitors increased their lead to 16 points, 40-24, after a three pointer by DeSutter with 18:13 left. Anderson (1-12, 0-6 HCAC) cut the deficit to 44-34 at the 14:53 mark following a layup by Nyomi Defiel.

Later, Franklin scored seven straight points to build a 51-34 lead midway through the second half. The Ravens used defense and a 9-0 run to to trail 51-43 with 6:30 left.

However, a layup by freshman Kayle Comer (Brownsburg, Ind./Brownsburg) and two free throws from junior Nichole Thompson (Greenwood, Ind./Greenwood) pushed Franklin's lead back to double figures. The lead grew to 59-45 after a jumper by Thompson with 2:06 remaining. The Grizzlies made six free throws in the final minute to secure the road triumph.

Individually, Comer scored 10 points and had a game-high five assists to go along with DeSutter's 21 points. Freshman Amber May (Indianapolis, Ind./Franklin Central) and Thompson each added eight points off the bench.

Franklin recorded 15 assist on its 21 made field goals.

The Ravens were led by Shelby Shaffer with 17 points.

Franklin returns to the action on Wednesday, January 15 at 7:30 p.m. when it hosts Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology from the Spurlock Center.
