Richmond, Ind. - The Franklin College volleyball team earned two victories to open the Earlham Invitational on Saturday, defeating Wilmington College 3-0 and the University of Michigan-Dearborn 3-1.
A balanced attack led Franklin to a 25-19, 25-14, 25-22 win over Wilmington. Three players recorded six or more kills, led by sophomore Emily Young (Avon, Ind./Avon) and junior Jordan Finke (Indianapolis, Ind./Lutheran) with seven kills each. The Grizzlies recorded .257 and .205 hitting percentages in the second and third sets respectively.
Against Michigan-Dearborn, the Grizzlies rallied after dropping the opening set, 25-21, to win the next three frames 25-17, 26-24 and 26-24. Franklin squared the match behind a .147 hitting percentage in the second set. Sophomore Theresa Brown (Indianapolis, Ind./Franklin Central) had a team-high 12 kills. Finke posted nine kills, while sophomore Kourtney Settle (Vallonia, Ind./Brownstown Central) had eight kills.
Bazier had 35 assists and four players tallied 10 or more digs, led by Wieneke's 36 digs. Brown tallied 18 digs, while Bazier and Young had 12 and 10 digs respectively.
Franklin stands 2-4 on the season entering the final two matches of the Earlham Invitational on Sunday, September 8. The Grizzlies battle Ohio Wesleyan University at 10 a.m. before facing Anderson University in a non-conference battle at 2 p.m.
