Women’s Tennis Falls in Season Opener

Franklin, Ind. - The defending Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference (HCAC) regular season and tournament champion Franklin College women's tennis team dropped its 2013 season opener 7-2 to North Central College on Monday at Grizzly Park on the Franklin College campus.

The doubles duo of sophomore Melissa Sanders (Columbus, Ind./Columbus North) and junior Bethany Harris (Avon, Ind./Avon) picked up an 8-3 triumph over the Cardinals' top doubles team.

Sanders later earned a three-set triumph at No. 1 singles, winning a deciding third-set tiebreaker 10-1. She forced the third set with a 6-3 score in the second set.

Sophomore Shawnee Bayes (Lexington, Ind./Austin) fell in a hard-fought three-set match at No. 5 singles. Bayes won a tiebreaker in the second set 7-5, but fell 6-3 to North Central's Rebecca Ross.

Franklin begins defense of its HCAC title when it host the College of Mount St. Joseph on Saturday, September 14 at 1 p.m. from Grizzly Park.
