Franklin, Ind. - The Franklin College women's tennis team opened defense of its Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference championship by not dropping a set in a 9-0 victory over the College Mount St. Joseph on Saturday at Grizzly Park.
Franklin's top doubles team of sophomore Melissa Sanders (Columbus, Ind./Columbus North) and junior Bethany Harris (Avon, Ind./Avon) dropped only one game in earning its second victory of the fall season. Sophomore Chelsea Platt (Shelbyville, Ind./Morristown) and freshman Emily Helvie (Batesville, Ind./Batesville) earned an 8-3 win at No. 2 doubles. Sophomore Chelsea Howell (West Harrison, Ind./Franklin County) and freshman Alison Meyer (Batesville, Ind./Batesville) won 8-0 to round out the doubles action.
In singles, Sanders improved to 2-0 on the season with a 6-0, 6-1 triumph to anchor the lineup. Harris dropped only two games to win her No. 2 singles match.
Other singles winners were sophomore Emily Roberts (Franklin, Ind./Edinburgh), victorious 6-4, 6-1 at No. 3 singles; Howell, a 6-1, 6-1 victor at the No. 4 position; freshman Kayla Walker (Indianapolis, Ind./Southport), with a 6-1, 6-0 triumph at No. 5 singles; and, sophomore Shawnee Bayes (Lexington, Ind./Austin), who won 6-0, 6-0 at the No. 6 position.
The Grizzlies return to the court on Sunday, September 15 against Indiana University Southeast, starting at noon, from Grizzly Park.
