Vanessa Benham Nets Hat Trick in Women’s Soccer First Win of Season
Terre Haute, Ind. - Franklin College senior Vanessa Benham (Needham, Ind./Franklin Community) scored a hat trick in a 6-3 victory over Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College on Friday afternoon. The victory marked the first win of the season.
Benham quickly found the back of the net in the third minute of the match following an assist from junior Hayley Kemp (Avon, Ind./Avon). The duo would later hook up three minutes into the second half to give the visitors a 3-2 advantage. Benham's third goal of the match came in the 70th minute after another Kemp assists. The score gave Franklin a 5-3 lead.
After Saint Mary-of-the-Woods took a 2-1 lead after a pair of goals in the 21st and 27th minute, junior Brandy Ramaj (Washington, Ind./Washington) squared the match in the final four minutes of the first half. Sophomore Emma Hagist (New Palestine, Ind./New Palestine) contributed to the scoring opportunity.
The Grizzlies scored three goals in a 12-minute span to a 3-3 tie in the second half. Junior Kayla Dragstrem (Brownsburg, Ind./Brownsburg) successfully converted a penalty kick after a SMWC foul inside the box during a Benham scoring chance in the 61st minute. Ramaj scored her second goal of the match to cap the scoring from a Benham assist in the 73rd minute.
Freshman Kelsie Williams (Indianapolis, Ind./Warren Central) got the victory in net, recording three saves during the second half.
Franklin improves to 1-2 on the season and return to the pitch on Saturday, September 14 at 2 p.m. when it travels to MacMurray College (Illinois). The team's home opener is set for Sunday, September 15 at 1 p.m. against Oberlin College (Ohio) from Faught Stadium.
