Terre Haute, Ind. - The Franklin College women's basketball team had three double-figure scorers, but it was not enough in losing 65-61 at Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology in Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference (HCAC) action on Wednesday.
Franklin (13-11, 11-6 HCAC) was led by sophomore Katie Brewer (Indianapolis, Ind./Roncalli) with 13 points and six rebounds. Freshman Kayle Comer (Brownsburg, Ind./Brownsburg) scored 12 points and junior Nichole Thompson (Greenwood, Ind./Greenwood) added 11 points.
Rose-Hulman (9-15, 7-10 HCAC) led 38-31 at the half behind 50 percent shooting from the floor. Carrie Morris led the team with a game-high 25 points. Abbie Marshall was also in double figures with 12 points.
The Fightin' Engineers took a 29-16 lead after a three pointer by Kristen Belyea with 6:57 left in the first half. The Grizzlies went on an 8-0 run over the next two minutes to trim the deficit to five points, 29-24.
In the second half, Franklin trailed 46-45 following a three-point field goal from Comer with 11:35 left. Comer connected on another shot from behind the arc to tie the game at 49-49 midway through the period.
Later, Thompson scored on a layup to tie the game at 59-59 at the 2:23 mark. Marshall converted a layup for Rose-Hulman on the next possession to regain the lead 61-59. Freshman Lauren DeSutter (Pittsboro, Ind./Tri-West) hit a jumper with 1:47 left to tie the game at 61-61.
However, two made free throws by Belyea and three missed shots by Franklin on its next possession gave Rose-Hulman the ball with 17 seconds left. Leading 63-61, Morris connected on two free throws to secure the victory.
