Women’s Basketball Loses to No. 25-Ranked Transylvania
Franklin, Ind. - No. 25-ranked Transylvania University earned a 72-54 victory over the Franklin College women's basketball team on Wednesday inside the Spurlock Center on Senior Night.
Despite the loss, the Grizzlies secured a berth in the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference (HCAC) tournament based on other results in the league. Franklin stands 12-10 overall and is 10-5 in conference play.
Sophomore Katie Brewer (Indianapolis, Ind./Roncalli) had a double-double with 13 points and a career-high 14 rebounds. She also recorded six blocks to lead the Grizzlies.
Franklin cut a nine-point first-half deficit to two points, 29-27, following a layup by Brewer with 3:17 left in the period.
Transylvania (20-2, 14-1 HCAC) used an 8-1 run over the next minute to hold a 37-28 lead at the 1:22 mark. A pair of free throws by freshman Hanna Ballard (Columbus, Ind./Columbus North) trimmed the margin to the halftime score of 37-30.
In the second half, Franklin trailed 42-37 after a three-point field goal by freshman Lauren DeSutter (Pittsboro, Ind./Tri-West) with 16:54 remaining. The visiting Pioneers would use a 10-2 run over the next seven minutes to take a 52-39 lead. The margin stayed in double figures the rest of the way.
Transylvania was led by Nicole Coffman with 30 points. Madisen Webb had 12 points and seven assists.
Franklin's DeSutter added nine points, while junior Nichole Thompson (Greenwood, Ind./Greenwood) scored eight points off the bench.
