Defense Leads Women’s Basketball to Home Win over Anderson
Franklin, Ind. - The Franklin College women's basketball team raced out to an 18-point halftime lead in defeating Anderson University 74-50 in a Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference (HCAC) victory on Saturday in the Spurlock Center.
The Grizzlies (11-8, 9-3 HCAC) shot 54 percent for the contest and had 18 assists on 29 made field goals. The victory kept the hosts in a tie for second place in the conference standings.
Franklin held the Ravens to 30 percent shooting in building a 37-19 lead in the first half.
Junior Nichole Thompson (Greenwood, Ind./Greenwood) led four double-figure scorers with 16 points. Freshman Kayle Comer (Brownsburg, Ind./Brownsburg) added 15 points. Classmate Lexi Ingram (Bloomington, Ind./Bloomington South) scored a career-high 11 points and made two three-point field goals. Junior Lindsey Dall (Brownsburg, Ind./Brownsburg) chipped in 10 points in the victory.
Freshman Mandy Fisher (Mooresville, Ind./Mooresville) had a balanced effort with seven points, eight rebounds and eight assists. The guard made both of her field goal attempts and was 3-of-3 at the free throw line.
The Grizzlies used a 21-3 run midway through the first half to take a 31-12 advantage at the 6:39 mark. A layup by freshman Sarah Taylor (Fishers, Ind./Fishers) pushed the lead to 35-14 with 4:50 left in the first half. Taylor scored seven points off the bench.
The lead would grow to 30 points, 70-40, following a free throw by freshman Hanna Ballard (Columbus, Ind./Columbus North) with 4:28 left in the contest. The guard came off the bench to score nine points and have a game-high five steals.
Anderson (2-17, 1-11 HCAC) did not get the deficit closer than the halftime margin of 18 points after intermission.
Franklin returns to action on Wednesday, February 5 at 7:30 p.m. when it travels to Hanover College.
