Brewer’s Career Night Leads Women’s Basketball to HCAC Opening Victory
Franklin, Ind. - Franklin College sophomore Katie Brewer (Indianapolis, Ind./Roncalli) had career highs with 25 points and 13 rebounds in leading the women's basketball team to an 82-76 victory over Hanover College on Wednesday from the Spurlock Center. The game was the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference (HCAC) opener for both teams.
The first half featured nine ties and five lead changes during the competitive 20 minutes. Hanover took a 37-35 halftime advantage after a jumper by Elyse Weddle just before the half ended.
Hanover (1-4, 0-1 HCAC) took a 44-37 lead following a layup by Alicia Hopkins with 17:16 left in the second half. The Panthers had a 51-45 advantage a few minutes later after a three-point play by Caitlin Bischoff.
However, Franklin (2-5, 1-0 HCAC) went on an 8-0 run to take a 53-51 lead after a layup by freshman Amber May (Indianapolis, Ind./Franklin Central) at the 13:21 mark.
A layup by freshman Hanna Ballard (Columbus, Ind./Columbus North) put the hosts ahead 60-56 midway through the second half. Hanover answered by scoring the next four points to square the game at 60-60 with 7:51 left.
Later, Franklin regained the lead 66-65 after Brewer put back a shot from a missed free throw. The score came with just over five minutes left in the game. Freshman Mandy Fisher (Mooresville, Ind./Mooresville) split a pair of free throws, but following another offensive rebound freshman Kayle Comer (Brownsburg, Ind./Brownsburg) drained a three pointer to give Franklin a 70-65 lead with 4:30 left.
Following a Hanover turnover, Brewer connected on a three-point field goal to increase the lead to eight points. The Panthers missed a shot on their next possession. Brewer would make a jumper for a 75-65 lead at the 2:56 mark. The basket capped an 11-0 run over the two-minute stretch.
Hanover could only get as close as the game's final score, 82-76, during the final three minutes.
Individually, Brewer had six steals and three blocked shots to go along with her 25 points. Comer scored 17 points, while junior Lindsey Dall (Brownsburg, Ind./Brownsburg) added 12 points and nine rebounds. Freshman Lauren DeSutter (Pittsboro, Ind./Tri-West) had 11 points and Fisher rounded out the scoring attack with nine points.
Hanover was led by Weddle with 22 points. The game featured 16 ties and 12 lead changes.
