Brewer Nets 20 Points in Women’s Basketball’s Narrow Loss to No. 1 DePauw

Franklin, Ind. - Franklin College had a halftime lead against defending NCAA Division III national champion and consensus No. 1-ranked DePauw University, but lost 65-54 on Saturday afternoon at the Franklin Tip-Off Classic in the Spurlock Center.

Sophomore Katie Brewer (Indianapolis, Ind./Butler) scored 20 points on 8-of-10 shooting from the floor. She earned all-tournament honors following opening weekend action.

Franklin (0-2) used a 20-3 run over the final 9:51 of the first half to take a 29-22 lead into the break. Brewer started the rally with eight consecutive points to trim the deficit to 19-18 at the 7:49 mark. A layup by junior Nichole Thompson (Greenwood, Ind./Greenwood) gave the hosts a 21-20 advantage with 5:21 left in the first half.

A pair of Thompson free throws with 53 seconds left gave Franklin a 26-22 advantage. Junior Lindsey Dall (Brownsburg, Ind./Brownsburg) drained a three pointer before the first half ended to put the Grizzlies ahead by seven points.

In the second half, both teams battled back-and-forth with DePauw taking a 38-37 lead following a basket by Alex Gasaway at the 10:49 mark. The two teams traded baskets on the next couple of possessions. Franklin junior Katie Dale (Indianapolis, Ind./Roncalli) made a layup to tie the game at 43-43 with just under nine minutes left in the contest.

Later, DePauw (2-0) used a 7-0 run to build a 54-45 advantage with 6:20 remaining. The Grizzlies could only get as close as six points, 60-54, after a jumper by freshman Lauren DeSutter (Pittsboro, Ind./Tri-West) at the 1:39 mark.

The Grizzlies shot 42 percent from the floor and held DePauw to just 36 percent shooting. The visiting Tigers went undefeated last season in capturing the school's second national title.

Franklin's Thompson added 10 points off the bench. Dale chipped in eight points and Dall scored seven points. Senior Krista Schott (Indianapolis, Ind./Perry Meridian) had nine rebounds and eight assists.
