Women’s Basketball Loses Season Opener to Denison

Franklin, Ind. - The Franklin College women's basketball team lost 53-50 to Denison University in the 2013-14 season opener on Friday evening in the Franklin Tip-Off Classic at the Spurlock Center.

Senior Krista Schott (Indianapolis, Ind./Perry Meridian) had a balanced effort with 10 points, nine rebounds and seven assists.

Freshman Lauren DeSutter (Pittsboro, Ind./Tri-West) led the team with 12 points. Junior Lindsey Dall (Brownsburg, Ind./Brownsburg) and sophomore Katie Brewer (Indianapolis, Ind./Butler) each added eight points.

Franklin rallied from a 17-7 first-half deficit to trail 24-22 at halftime.

The Grizzlies opened the second half on a 15-2 run capped by a layup from junior Nichole Thompson (Greenwood, Ind./Greenwood) at the 12:53 mark. The basket gave the hosts a 37-26 lead.

Franklin had its largest lead of the game, 39-26, following a jump shot by DeSutter with 11:30 remaining.

However, Denison closed the game on an 18-5 run over the final six minutes. DeSutter attempted a game-tying three pointer at the buzzer.

Franklin shot 46 percent in the contest and held a 37-33 rebounding edge.

The Grizzlies return to action on Saturday, November 16 at 3 p.m. against defending NCAA Division III national champion DePauw University from the Spurlock Center.
