Franklin, Ind. - The Franklin College softball team improved to 9-5 on the season in splitting a doubleheader with Calumet College of St. Joseph's on Friday afternoon from Behrens Field. The Grizzlies bounced from a 13-5 defeat in the opener to record a 9-5 victory in the second contest.
The Grizzlies recorded 24 hits in the two games, led by 14 hits in the second game.
Franklin used a four-run fourth inning to take its first lead of the game, 5-4. Freshman Savannah Blevins (Wilkinson, Ind./Eastern Hancock) homered to open the frame. A two-run single by freshman Megan Lalioff (Fishers, Ind./Fishers) tied the game at 4-4. A groundout by sophomore Anne Schwomeyer (Greenwood, Ind./Greenwood) plated Lalioff to give the Grizzlies the 5-4 advantage.
The team added two more runs in the fifth inning. Then, Calumet (4-11) threatened in the top of the sixth inning by plating two runs to trim the deficit to 7-6. However, Franklin scored two insurance runs on a double by sophomore Katie Struewing (Greenwood, Ind./Greenwood) in the bottom of the inning.
Sophomore McKensie Vanosdol (North Vernon, Ind./Jennings County) struck out six batters and allowed three earned runs in tossing her third complete game of the season. Vanosdol improved to 7-1 inside the circle this spring.
Freshman Jeana Gregory (Mooresville, Ind./Mooresville) led the 14-hit attack in the second game by going 3-for-3 with a run scored. Lalioff drove in three runs and Struewing went 2-for-4 with two RBI.
In the opener, Calumet built a 7-0 advantage behind a three-run second inning and adding four more runs in the fourth inning. Franklin scored two runs in the fourth and plated three runs in the fifth inning. The visitors tallied 19 hits in the victory.
Franklin returns to action on Saturday, March 22 at 1 p.m. when it travels to Oakland City University. The team is scheduled to be back at Behrens Field on Sunday, March 23 at 1 p.m. against St. Mary-of-the-Woods College. Live statistics of Sunday's game will be available here.
