Franklin, Ind. - The Franklin College softball team lost its 2014 home opener in a doubleheader sweep to DePauw University, losing 7-6 and 7-1 on Tuesday at the Grizzly Park softball complex.
Franklin (6-4) broke a 3-3 tie in the opener on a two-run home run by freshman Taylor Johnson (Beech Grove, Ind./Beech Grove) in the fifth inning. The home run was the first of her career.
However, DePauw (5-5) answered with four runs in the top of the sixth inning to take its first lead of the game, 7-5. The Grizzlies threatened in the seventh inning as sophomore McKensie Vanosdol (North Vernon, Ind./Jennings County) drove in sophomore Katie Struewing (Greenwood, Ind./Greenwood) with a double. The team had the potential game-tying run stranded at third base as DePauw's Kahla Nolan retired the final two batters to secure the victory.
Franklin took an 2-0 first inning lead as Johnson was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded and freshman Baylea Suiters (Indianapolis, Ind./Lutheran) singled to plate Vanosdol. DePauw tied the game at 3-3 with a two-run third inning.
In the second game, the visiting Tigers scored three times in the first and second innings to build a 6-0 advantage.
Franklin pushed a run across in the bottom of the second inning on a run-scoring single by freshman Jeana Gregory (Mooresville, Ind./Mooresville).
DePauw capped the scoring with a run in the top of the fifth inning. The second game was called after five innings due to darkness.
Freshman Savannah Blevins (Wilkinson, Ind./Eastern Hancock) led the offensive attack, going 3-for-6 and scoring two runs on the day. Two of her hits came in the second game.
Struewing went 3-for-4 with three runs scored and had two doubles in the opener. Vanosdol slapped two hits and drove in two runs in the first contest.
