Softball Finishes Florida Trip with 6-2 Record After Two Tuesday Wins
Fort Myers, Fla. The Franklin College softball team concluded its Florida trip with a 6-2 record after defeating Dominican University (Ill.) 4-2 and Wilmington College (Ohio) 2-1 on Tuesday at the Gene Cusic Classic in Fort Myers, Florida.
Franklin scored two runs in the seventh inning to rally past Wilmington. The team has rallied to post four of its six victories so far this season.
Trailing 1-0 in the seventh, freshman Savannah Blevins (Wilkinson, Ind./Eastern Hancock) started the Grizzlies' rally with a single. Freshman Jeana Gregory (Mooresville, Ind./Mooresville) reached on a fielder's choice and stole second base to put the tying run in scoring position.
A groundout moved Gregory to third base with two outs in the inning. Freshman Megan Lalioff (Fishers, Ind./Fishers) came through with a run-scoring triple to score Gregory for the tying run. Next, freshman Jasmine Hanna (Frankfort, Ind./Clinton Prairie) put Franklin ahead 2-1 with a single that plated Lalioff.
Wilmington (2-4) threatened in the bottom of the seventh inning with consecutive one-out singles. A wild pitch advanced the potentially game-tying run to third base. However, freshman Shannon Farr (Indianapolis, Ind./Franklin Central) got Wilmington's Allie Noggle out at third base to halt the rally.
Freshman Nichole Brown (Osgood, Ind./Jac-Cen-Del) pitched 3.2 scoreless innings in relief to record her first victory of the season. She scattered two hits in the performance. Hanna started in the circle, allowing three hits and one run in 3.1 innings.
Lalioff led the team's five-hit attack with two hits and a run scored against Wilmington.
The Grizzlies are scheduled to open the home portion of their schedule on Saturday, March 8 at 1 p.m. with a doubleheader against Ohio Christian University from the Grizzly Park softball complex.
