Men’s Tennis Opens South Carolina Trip with Win over Hartwick
Hilton Head, S.C. - The Franklin College men's tennis team started its South Carolina Spring Break trip with a commanding 8-1 victory over Hartwick College on Friday from Hilton Head.
The Grizzlies improve to 2-3 on the season and will remain in Hilton Head for training sessions throughout Spring Break. The team returns to action on Sunday, April 6 at noon when it travels to Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology.
Junior Ryan Hammer (Greenwood, Ind./Greenwood) led the team with victories at No. 1 singles and doubles action. He dropped only three games in winning his singles match (6-2, 6-1) over Hartwick's Brian Redder. Hammer teamed with freshman Ethan Caldwell (Terre Haute, Ind./Terre Haute North) to win 8-4 in doubles.
Caldwell was also a winner in singles play, earning a 6-1, 6-3 triumph at the No. 2 position.
Junior Robby Woehrle (Avon, Ind./Avon) recorded his second singles win of the season with a 6-3, 6-0 triumph in the No. 4 match. Classmate Evan Pierle (Indianapolis, Ind./Perry Meridian) and Woehrle gave Franklin a 1-0 lead in doubles action with an 8-1 win at the No. 3 position.
Junior Jared Hunt (New Whiteland, Ind./Whiteland Community) picked up a 6-3, 6-1 victory at No. 5 singles. He and doubles partner junior Luke Snyder (Franklin, Ind./Franklin Community) won 8-3 at the No. 2 match.
Senior Neal Herzog (Milan, Ind./Milan) rounded out the winners at No. 6 singles by identical 6-3 set scores.
