Cincinnati, Ohio - A hat trick by Franklin College men's soccer freshman Antonio Gioe (Martinsville, Ind./Mooresville) led an offensive attack in a 5-1 Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference (HCAC) road triumph at the College of Mount St. Joseph on Saturday.
Gioe's three goals came in the first seven minutes of the match.
Franklin (4-5-2, 2-1 HCAC) won consecutive matches for the second time this season. Gioe scored an unassisted goal in the fifth minute of the match. For his second tally, he received a pass from sophomore Zachery Shoufler (Fortville, Ind./Greenfield-Central) in the sixth minute. Gioe concluded the early scoring outburst 31 seconds later when he found the back of the net for the sixth time this fall.
In the second half, Shoufler scored an unassisted goal in the 49th minute to give the visitors a 4-0 edge. Sophomore Austin Fundenberger (Indianapolis, Ind./North Central) scored his third goal of the season in the 66th minute for a 5-0 lead. That goal was set up on Shoufler's second assist of the contest.
Franklin edge a 14-13 shot edge in the match. Gioe and Fundenberger led the team with three shots each.
Senior goalkeeper Lucas Hill (Culver, Ind./Plymouth) made seven saves and did not allow a goal during his 73 minutes of action.
Franklin returns to the pitch on Wednesday, October 16 at 7 p.m. when it hosts Transylvania University in HCAC action at Faught Stadium.
