Men’s Soccer Drops Daniel Schuetz Community Classic Opener to Ohio Northern
Franklin, Ind. - The Franklin College men's soccer team could not hold onto a one goal halftime advantage in dropping a 3-1 match to nationally ranked Ohio Northern University on Friday at Faught Stadium. The match concluded the first day of the Daniel Schuetz Community Classic.
Sophomore Austin Fundenberger (Indianapolis, Ind./North Central) gave the host a 1-0 lead in the 33rd minute after he dribbled across the 18-yard box. He fired a shot to the upper left corner of the net. Fundenberger was last season's Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference's Freshman of the Year in 2012.
The Polar Bears squared the match six minutes into the second half on a goal by Michael Grossnickle. The visitors took a 2-1 advantage in the 75th minute when Matt Fleming crossed a pass to Ryan Prescott in front of the net to finish for the goal. Jeremy Barnes concluded the second-half scoring in the 81st minute.
Ohio Northern, who in last year's NCAA Division III national championship match, held a 10-6 shot advantage and a 10-1 edge in corner kicks.
Fundenberger paced the Grizzlies offensive attack with five shots, including two on goal. Senior William Hilgendorf (Indianapolis, Ind./Lawrence Central) added one shot on goal in the match.
Senior Lucas Hill (Culver, Ind./Plymouth) made four saves in goal, including three during a scoreless first half.
Franklin returns to the pitch on Saturday, August 31 against in-state foe Trine University at 7 p.m. to conclude play in the Daniel Schuetz Community Classic at Faught Stadium.
