Franklin, Ind. - Franklin College sophomore Trae Washington (Bloomington, Ind./Bloomington South) and senior Bailey Howard (Nashville, Ind./Brown County) combined for 39 points, but it was not enough as the men's basketball team lost 80-65 to Hanover College on Wednesday on Bankers Rivalry Night in the Spurlock Center.
Local bankers were game sponsors for their contributions to the men's basketball program.
Hanover (13-7, 9-4 HCAC) shot 71 percent in the second half to outscore the Grizzlies by 13 points.
Franklin (9-11, 6-7 HCAC) raced out to a 17-5 lead in the first eight minutes of the game. The team led 22-12 after a layup by freshman Aaron Mann (Indianapolis, Ind./Howe) with 10:22 left in the period.
A layup by Washington gave Franklin a 26-17 advantage with 5:55 remaining in the first half.
Hanover went on an 18-7 run to close out the half to take a 35-33 halftime lead.
In the second half, the two teams traded baskets in the early portion. The Panthers led 61-46 midway through the second half.
Franklin got within eight points, 73-65, after a three pointer by Howard with 1:27 left. The visitors scored the game's final seven points to secure the victory.
Washington scored a game-high 21 points and had five assists. Howard scored 18 points and made three three-point field goals. Sophomore Dion Smith (Indianapolis, Ind./Franklin Central) scored nine points and had nine rebounds.
Hanover's Desmond Marks had 18 points, while V.J. Billups added 17 points and Tim Bass scored 15 points.
Franklin returns to action on Saturday, February 8 at 2 p.m. on Alumni Day when it hosts Bluffton University. Former players will participate in an alumni game at 11 a.m. from the Spurlock Center.
