Franklin, Ind. - The Franklin College men's basketball team looks to return to its winning ways when Defiance College comes to the Spurlock Center on Saturday, January 18 at 4 p.m.
The Grizzlies have lost their last three games and stand 3-4 in Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference (HCAC) action. The team is in a three-way tie for fifth place in the conference standings. Franklin is 6-8 on the season.
The latest setback was a 74-56 loss at HCAC co-leader Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology on Wednesday. Senior Bailey Howard (Nashville, Ind./Brown County) scored 17 points in his return to the lineup after missing two games because of an injury. The guard leads the conference in scoring at 23.2 points per contest.
Sophomore Dion Smith (Indianapolis, Ind./Franklin Central) is averaging 12.3 points per game. He leads the team with 21 blocks and 21 steals. Seniors Troy Porter (Frankfort, Ind./Frankfort) and Terry Sargent (Indianapolis, Ind./Howe) are both scoring over 11 points per outing for the season. Sargent is leading the Grizzlies with 5.6 rebounds per contest.
Sophomore Trae Washington (Bloomington, Ind./Bloomington South) is tops on the team with 60 assists.
Franklin is averaging 79.1 points per game and shooting 49 percent from the floor this winter.
Defiance is tied for second place in the HCAC with a 5-2 league record. The Yellow Jackets stand 10-4 on the season after earning a 55-42 home triumph over Bluffton University on Wednesday. Ryan Hicks leads the team's offensive attack at 18.6 points per game, while Bernard Edwards is at 15.6 points per game. The Yellow Jackets have used the same starting lineup in all 14 games this season.
