Men’s Basketball Loses at Trine

Angola, Ind. - A late run lifted Trine University past the Franklin College men's basketball team 78-74 on Wednesday evening in a road non-conference contest.

Trine (5-3) scored 14 of the game's final 17 points after trailing 71-64 with 4:52 left. A layup by Trine's Jared Holmquist cut the lead to 71-70 with 3:03 remaining. Teammate Tyler Good split a pair of free throws to tie the game, 71-71, with 1:37 left.

After Franklin missed a jumper on its next offensive possession, Trine's Todd Watkins made one of his two free throw attempts to give the hosts a 72-71 advantage with 1:17 left. Will Dixon converted a three-point play with 26 seconds left. The score put the Thunder ahead 74-71. Trine secured the victory by making four free throws in the closing seconds.

Franklin freshman Robbie Prather (Franklin, Ind./Roncalli) made a three pointer before the buzzer to brake the Thunder's scoring streak.

Franklin (5-4) had four double-figure scorers, led by sophomore Dion Smith (Indianapolis, Ind./Franklin Central) with 17 points. Senior Bailey Howard (Nashville, Ind./Brown County) added 14 points. Senior Troy Porter (Frankfort, Ind./Frankfort) had 12 points, while Prather scored 11 points off the bench.

The Grizzlies shot 51 percent from the floor and made nine three-point field goals in the game. The team has made 25 three pointers over the last two contest.

Trine's Dixon scored a game-high 22 points, while Nick Tatu added 19 points.

Franklin led 44-43 at halftime, but Trine grabbed a 58-50 lead after a layup by Dixon at the 14:25 mark. However, the visitors used a 13-2 run over the next six minutes to take a 63-60 lead. Franklin's lead grew to seven points, 71-64, before Trine's late run.
