Hanover, Ind. - The Franklin College men's basketball team placed four players in double figures in earning a 74-68 road win over Hanover College in the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference (HCAC) opener on Wednesday.
Senior Troy Porter (Frankfort, Ind./Frankfort) tied his career high with 21 points to lead four double-figure scorers. The forward scored 18 points in the first half. He made five of his seven 3-point field goal attempts in the game.
Sophomore Dion Smith (Indianapolis, Ind./Franklin Central) recorded his third double-double of the season with 18 points and 10 rebounds. Senior Terry Sargent (Indianapolis, Ind./Howe) added 14 points, while senior Bailey Howard (Nashville, Ind./Brown County) scored 13 points. Howard topped 1,100 career points in the victory.
Franklin (4-2, 1-0 HCAC) led 28-20 in the first half following a jumper by Porter with 7:54 remaining. It marked the largest lead that either team would have during the first half. Hanover (3-2, 0-1 HCAC) closed the half on a 20-10 run to take a 40-38 halftime advantage.
In the second half, the Panthers took a 55-51 lead at the 12:49 mark after a layup by Tim Bass. The Grizzlies answered with three pointer by Porter to trim the deficit to 55-54 with 12:10 left.
With Hanover leading 62-59 with 8:02 left, the visitors went on a 10-0 run over five minutes. A layup by Smith capped the run and gave the Grizzlies a 69-62 lead with 3:39 left. Howard scored seven of his 13 points during the five-minute stretch.
Hanover closed to within 71-68 after a pair of free throws by Bass. However, Franklin held off the charge and secured the victory by making three free throws in the final minute.
The Grizzlies shot 47.5 percent from the floor and made six 3-point field goals.
