Terre Haute, Ind. - The Franklin College baseball team lost at Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference (HCAC) leader Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology 8-4 on Tuesday from Terre Haute, Indiana. The game ended the Grizzlies' eight-game road swing.
Rose-Hulman (12-4, 7-0 HCAC) broke a 4-4 tie behind a three-run sixth inning. Caleb Kissel hit a two-run double and Donnie Waters followed with a single to plate Kissel.
Franklin (13-8, 4-3 HCAC) got out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning when sophomore Joe Ardizzone (Indianapolis, Ind./Roncalli) doubled to score junior Mitch Frey (Kokomo, Ind./Kokomo). Sophomore Braden Pelley (Columbus, Ind./Columbus North) hit a ground out to plate senior Scott Windler (Lafayette, Ind./Lafayette Central Catholic).
The host Fightin' Engineers answered with a two-run first inning on a two-run single by Andrew Benitez.
The Grizzlies responded to take back the lead, 4-2, in the fifth inning as junior Jameson Brock (Noblesville, Ind./Noblesville) singled home senior Rickey DuBois (Mishawaka, Ind./Penn). A sacrifice fly by Ardizzone scored freshman Cody Shipley (Kokomo, Ind./Kokomo).
Rose-Hulman once again quickly answered with two runs in the bottom half of the inning to tie the game. Then, the hosts scored three runs in the sixth inning and added an insurance run in the eighth inning.
Individually, Windler led Franklin's attack with two hits and a run scored. Ardizzone drove in two runs. Shipley also recorded two hits.
The Grizzlies return to action on Friday, April 4 at 4 p.m. when they host Anderson University to begin the first three-game home HCAC series of the season.
