Franklin, Ind. - Junior Seth Powers (Greenfield, Ind./Greenfield-Central) struck out 14 batters in tossing his first career complete-game shutout to give the Franklin College baseball team its second road Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference (HCAC) series victory.
The Grizzlies responded with a 2-0 win after dropping the opener 2-1 of Sunday's doubleheader.
Franklin (13-7, 4-2 HCAC) broke a scoreless game on a two-out double from junior Mitch Frey (Kokomo, Ind./Kokomo) in the seventh inning. The base hit scored freshman Cody Shipley (Kokomo, Ind./Kokomo).
Earlham (11-7, 3-3 HCAC) got a leadoff double from Ted Williams to open the ninth inning. Powers got a strikeout before Alex Arovits drew a walk to put the potential game-tying run on base. After a groundout moved both runners into scoring position, Powers got Josh Parr to strikeout to secure the victory.
Junior Tyler Ison (Whiteland, Ind./Whiteland Community) and Pelley each had two hits to lead the eight-hit attack in the second game. Ison had two hits in the opener.
In the first game, Earlham got a pair of two-out run-scoring singles by Eric Elkus and Ryan McCray to grab a 2-0 lead. Elkus got the Quakers on the scoreboard in the second inning. Then, McCray's single came in the sixth inning for an insurance run.
Franklin cut into the deficit with a sacrifice fly by junior Jameson Brock (Noblesville, Ind./Noblesville) in the seventh inning. Freshman Mitchell Sorrells (Brookville, Ind./Franklin County) scored on the play.
Earlham's Zach Lee struck out eight batters in tossing the complete game.
