Franklin, Ind. - The Franklin College baseball team lost two high-scoring affairs to Adrian College on Saturday afternoon at John P. McDowell Field. The Grizzlies dropped the opener 15-6 before falling 10-9 in 10 innings.
Franklin (8-4) fell behind early in the first game, trailing 3-0 after the first two innings. Senior Scott Windler (Lafayette, Ind./Lafayette Central Catholic) hit a two-run home run in the fifth inning to trim the deficit to 3-2. The home run was his second on the season.
Adrian (4-3) plated two runs each in the sixth and seventh innings to build a 7-3 lead. However, the Grizzlies battled back with three runs in the bottom of the eighth. Freshman Cody Shipley (Kokomo, Ind./Kokomo) plated freshman Mitchell Sorrells (Brookville, Ind./Franklin County) on a fielder's choice. Later, Windler cut the lead to 7-5 with a two-run single.
Adrian sealed the victory with an eight-run ninth inning.
In the second game, Adrian used a seven-run fifth inning to take a 9-5 lead. Both teams plated a run in the first inning before Franklin scored four times in the second inning to hold a 5-1 advantage.
The hosts tied the game at 9-9 with a four-run seventh inning. Sophomore Joe Ardizzone (Indianapolis, Ind./Roncalli) scored junior Mitch Frey (Kokomo, Ind./Kokomo) on a single. Sophomore Drew Kammerer (Fortville, Ind./Mt. Vernon) followed with a single to plate Windler. A run-scoring single by senior Ricky DuBois (Mishawaka, Ind./Penn) continued the rally to bring Franklin within one run, 9-8. Junior Tyler Ison (Whiteland, Ind./Whiteland Community) squared the game with a RBI groundout that allowed Kammerer to score.
The game remained tied until Adrian's Drew Shutes doubled to score Sam Fischer in the top of the 10th inning. The game marked the first extra-inning contest of the season.
Individually, Windler drove in six runs and had three hits on the day. Ardizzone collected two hits in each contest. Freshman Damon DeJesus (Fort Wayne, Ind./Blackhawk Christian) had two hits in the first game, while junior Jameson Brock (Noblesville, Ind./Noblesville) recorded a multiple-hit effort in the second contest.
Junior Seth Powers (Greenfield, Ind./Greenfield-Central) struck out four batters in 5.1 innings in relief in the second game.
