Franklin, Ind. - Two quality starting pitching performances helped lead the Franklin College baseball team to a doubleheader sweep of Thomas More College, 8-4 and 5-0, in the 2014 home opener on Saturday from John P. McDowell Field.

Senior Chris Hoopingarner (Indianapolis, Ind./Lawrence Central) and sophomore Hayden Cleveland (Brownsburg, Ind./Cardinal Ritter) each improved to 2-0 on the season and combined to allow just one run in 15 innings on the afternoon.

Thomas More (0-2) won two games while participating in the 2013 NCAA Division III Mideast Regional.

Franklin (5-2) jumped out to an 8-0 lead after four innings in the opener. Freshman Damon DeJesus (Fort Wayne, Ind./Blackhawk Christian) got the scoring started with a double to plate sophomore Drew Kammerer (Fortville, Ind./Mt. Vernon) in the second inning.

The Grizzlies added three runs in the third inning behind a bases-loaded walk and two hit batters.

Later, senior Scott Windler (Lafayette, Ind./Lafayette Central Catholic) put Franklin ahead 5-0 on a run-scoring single to plate junior Mitch Frey (Kokomo, Ind./Kokomo). A Thomas More error allowed Windler to score. Junior Matt Hooten (Washington, Ind./Washington) followed with a triple to score sophomore Joe Ardizzone (Indianapolis, Ind./Roncalli). The base hit capped a four-run fourth inning and extended the lead to 8-0.

Hoopingarner allowed one run and scattered five hits in eight innings.

The visiting Saints scored three runs in the top of the ninth inning to cut the deficit to 8-4 before senior Taylor Glaze (Lafayette, Ind./Lafayette Central Catholic) got a double play and a strikeout to end the contest.

In Saturday's second game, Cleveland threw a seven-inning, complete-game shutout. The left hander struck out nine batters and allowed just two hits in picking up his second win of the season.

Franklin pushed a run across during the second and third innings to grab an early 2-0 advantage.

In the fifth inning, Windler doubled and later scored on a single by Ardizzone. Sophomore Braden Pelley (Columbus, Ind./Columbus North) put the Grizzlies ahead 4-0 in the fifth with a single to plate Ardizzone. Franklin added another insurance run in the sixth inning.

Windler led the offensive attack with multiple-hit efforts in both games and scoring three runs on the day. Frey and DeJesus each had two hits in the opener, while Pelley slapped two hits in the second contest. The Grizzlies recorded eight hits in each game.

Thomas More's Craig Hyson had three hits in the first game.
