Auburndale, Fla. - The Franklin College baseball team scored a season-high 11 runs and 17 hits in earning an 11-10 victory over Concordia College (Minn.) on Tuesday afternoon at the RussMatt Classic in Auburndale, Florida.
The Grizzlies concluded the season-opening Florida trip with a 3-2 record. The team defeated St. Joseph's College (N.Y.) 10-3 on Saturday and split a doubleheader against No. 21-ranked Augustana College on Sunday.
Trailing 2-0, the Grizzlies scored three runs in the third inning to take their first lead of the contest. Sophomore Drew Kammerer (Fortville, Ind./Mt. Vernon) provided the big hit with a two-run single to cap the scoring in the frame.
Later, Franklin took a 9-4 lead behind a five-run fifth inning. Sophomore Chase Steinbrunner (Indianapolis, Ind./Roncalli) plated freshman Cody Shipley (Kokomo, Ind./Kokomo) with a single. Junior Jameson Brock (Noblesville, Ind./Noblesville) added a run-scoring single. Steinbrunner scored on junior Mitch Frey (Kokomo, Ind./Kokomo) for the fifth run in the inning.
After Concordia College tied the game at 10-10 with two runs scored in the top of the seventh inning, the Grizzlies scored the game-winning run on the fifth error of the game. Sophomore Joe Ardizzone (Indianapolis, Ind./Roncalli) scored after recording a single in the bottom of the seventh inning.
Brock and Frey led the 17-hit attack with each having three hits. Kammerer drove in three runs and had two hits in the victory. Ardizzone and Shipley also had multiple-hit efforts.
Freshman Jacob McMain (Kokomo, Ind./Kokomo) got his first collegiate win after coming in relief. He allowed one earned run and had three strikeouts in 3.2 innings.
The Grizzlies are scheduled to return to action with a doubleheader at Thomas More College (Ky.) on Saturday, March 1 at 1 p.m. The two teams are scheduled to close out the three-game series on Sunday, March 2 at 1 p.m. from Franklin's John P. McDowell Field.
