Fast Start Leads Baseball to Season-Opening Win
Auburndale, Fla. - The Franklin College baseball team scored nine runs in its first three innings for a season-opening 10-3 victory over St. Joseph's College (N.Y.) at the RussMatt Classic from Auburndale, Florida.
The Grizzlies built s 9-0 advantage by scoring three runs in the first inning, adding four runs in the second frame and having two runs in the third inning.
Senior Scott Windler (Lafayette, Ind./Lafayette Central Catholic) led the offensive attack, going 2-for-4 with four runs batted in. Junior Mitch Frey (Kokomo, Ind./Kokomo) drove in three runs with two hits. He also scored two runs.
Benefiting from the offense barrage was senior starting pitcher Chris Hoopingarner (Indianapolis, Ind./Lawrence Central), who tossed seven quality innings to pick up the victory. The left hander struck out seven batters and allowed two earned runs.
Frey quickly put the Grizzlies on the scoreboard with a run-scoring triple to plate Brock in the bottom of the first inning. Windler followed with a single to center field to score Frey. Franklin took a 3-0 lead on a groundout from junior Tyler Ison (Whiteland, Ind./Whiteland Community).
In the second inning, Frey drew a bases-loaded walk before Windler hit a sacrifice fly to give Franklin a 5-0 advantage. A two-run double by sophomore Joe Ardizzone (Indianapolis, Ind./Roncalli) capped the four-run second inning.
Later, Windler legged out a triple to push home two additional runs in the third inning.
Four of Franklin's eight hits went for extra bases, including three triples.
The pitching staff held St. Joseph's (1-2) to four hits in the contest.
Franklin returns to action on Sunday, February 23 at 12:30 p.m. for a doubleheader against preseason No. 21-ranked Augustana College from Winter Haven, Florida.
